Las Vegas

I visited Vegas over 20 years ago, and this was Stuart's first visit.

I recollect being impressed with the City first time around (the glitz and the glamour).  Second time around, I'm less impressed, in fact I have issues with Vegas and the normalization of the objectification of women.  However, that's not really what a holiday blog is about, so here are Stuart's first impressions of the city:-

Brash, fake, noisy, plastic.

Despite all this, we gritted our teeth and did the tourist thing.  We arrived late Saturday evening, and headed to the strip, which on a map looks easily walkable, but is actually huge.  We managed to wander around the major hotels in the centre of the strip, Caesars Palace, The Flamingo, The Mirage and the Venetian, and this took us until 2.30am!  They were all the same format, huge casinos and over priced restaurants throughout the ground floors.

However, there was one particular highlight of the evening when we went into the Venetian hotel just after midnight and it was as if we had been transported back into the daytime.  The hotel has reconstructed Venice inside the hotel itself, with a fake daylight ceiling.  When it is late and you are tired it's pretty effective!  (They have St Mark's square, Rialto Bridge, Bridge of Sighs and canals.  They don't do things by halves!)

Sunday was more of the same, but in the daylight.  We took a taxi to the Stratosphere at the top of the strip and walked back down, which pretty much took all day.

We did need to stop for refreshments half way down the strip at the Wynn hotel, in a lovely sunny hotel bar, with an amazing waterfall.
The waitress' outfit is one of the more demure outfits that we saw.  (Have I mentioned the objectification of women?)

At the end of our walk down the strip we got to see the fountains at Bellagio, which were lovely, but 2 nights at Vegas is more than enough!
