It was with much reluctance we left Dead Horse Ranch State Park. It was very pretty and very tranquil, so before breakfast we managed to fit in a short walk along a trail just next to the campsite. A lovely trail down by a river.
We need to start working our way back to Las Vegas, so we decided to head for Route 66 to take us part of the way there.
What we hadn't realised from looking at a map, was that the elevation changed from about 3,000 feet to 7,000 feet back down to 5,000 feet over the space of about 20 miles. This meant a particularly hairy journey along a lot of switchbacks.
Around lunch time we decided we needed a break, so Stuart could have a quick nap, whilst I made some cheese sandwiches for lunch. The road we were on seemed to go on for ever, with no lay-bys or stopping points whatsoever. So I resorted to asking Gladys, hoping she wouldn't pull up some one horse town again.
Having asked her to provide the nearest points of interest, she came up with a community centre, a park and a vineyard. No contest there, we headed for the vineyard. There was plenty of room to park and Stuart went for his nap. There was no way I was making cheese sandwiches when there was a vineyard to explore! What a result, Gladys is back in the good books. A delightful garden to sit in, with peacocks wandering around, light lunches and a glass of wine for the non-driver!
I'm afraid our stopping point for the night was one of the soulless private campgrounds. A car park of RVs and no trees for shade. It was so hot that a bunny came to sit in the shadow of our RV for a break from the heat!
